Best TV on the Web: Yacht Rock

To those deeply entrenched in underground comedy, the world of Yacht Rock is hardly new. In fact, the first episode of the series made its debut nearly three years ago. Upon discussing the show with some coworkers, however, I discovered that sadly, a large percentage of the outside world is still unfamiliar with the series. For my own part, I hadn't thought about it for some time, until, for reasonsI can't even begin to fathom, I woke up this Saturday morning with the Doobie Brothers' (or perhaps more properly, Michael McDonald's) "What a Fool Believes" stuck in my head.





I'm still having trouble explaining this phenomenon. Before Saturday, I couldn't tell you the last time I'd heard the song--or any of the Doobies' music, for that matter. It's been suggested to me by certain snarky producers that such a matter can only be explained away as the lingering strains of some strange Michael McDonald-related dream, but such a scenario is far too terrifying for me to entertain. Instead, I'll chalk it up to fate, because it led me to back to loving arms of Yacht Rock.

Seeking out the videos was the only rational course of action for ridding my mind of McDonald's soulful, husky baritone. You see, the phrase "yacht rock" refers to a retro musical subgenre comprising the work of McDonald, his sometimes cowriter Kenny Loggins, Toto, Christopher Cross, Steely Dan, and, on occasion, Hall
